Dean Pollock's account of Daniel Pollock's trip to the gold fields:
"My Grandfather (Daniel Ross) Pollock crossed the plains with a wagon train somewhere around 1853. He found there was more gold in trading than in digging, so he became a sort of gold broker down in the Mother Lode country. He was a millwright by trade, and Dad (Edgar A. Pollock) believed he came up the coast and built a mill in Albany, Oregon. ... He returned to Iowa within a few years, where his family had remained, going back by sea around Cape Horn. Dad said he remembered the old canvas money belt that kicked around the house, in which his father had carried back from California such gold as he had been able to get away with."
