Leaves From My Family Tree

My knowledge of the Payne family begins with Henry Ross Payne, who was born in Virginia. He married Rachel Clawson/Clauson, who was born in 1780 in Carolina.

I know of only one child, and that was my great-great-great grandfather, William Wilson Payne.

William Wilson Payne was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on 27 Dec 1806. He married Mahalath Haworth on 23 Feb 1832, and died 19 May 1880. Mahalath died 20 July 1884 in California.

William and Mahalath Payne had eleven children: Janes H, Ruth, Minerva, Tilghman Howard, Edward, Aaron, William, Infant Daughter, Henry, and Newton. Their first daughter, Ruth Payne, was my great-great-grandmother.

Ruth Payne was born in Vermillion County, Illinois, on 2 Feb 1836. She married Joseph Bever on 21 Feb 1861.

Ruth Payne Bever was a prolific quilter, and I have some of her quilts in my collection. The most precious quilt is the Rose Wreath, which she made before her marriage to Joseph Bever.
