"Taken Fall of 1888" is written on the back of this photo of Tunis. The bottom of the mat reads "G. W. Bechtel, Spokane Falls, W.T." Near Tunis' feet, in the bottom corner of the background mural, is what looks like "H.H. Calkin, LaPorte, Ind." My map of 1909 Indiana shows a LaPorte in the Northeast corner of the state. My guess is that this is the person who painted the mural. Among the notes handed down to me is a notation that Tunis was the "most handsome" of the Bever men. |
