Leaves From My Family Tree

Character Reference

This is the text of the document given to David S. Brown, attesting to his character, after his divorce from Helen Rosamond Brown:

"To whom it may concern; we the people of Pike N.Y. after a pleasant and profitable acquaintance with Rev. David S. Brown, for nearly two years, believe it to be our duty and esteem it a privilege under the existing circumstances, to give this general testimonial.

"Desiring to remove any apparent embarrassment in the way of his calling or vocation, wish to state that though his wife has deserted him, (leaving husband and daughter) That he still retains the undiminished confidence of the public.

"Furthermore we heartily commend him to the favorable consideration of any or all whom these facts should interest."
This document was signed by at least thirty-two members of the community, including the pastors of three other churches.

My aunt gave me a photocopy of the document, and I scanned the signature part of it, but it isn't very easy to read. When I can, I will borrow the original document from my aunt and scan from the original, rather than the photocopy.
