1894 Joseph, Wallowa, Oregon Dean's Father, Edgar Anderson Pollock, settled in Joseph.

Edgar had come west to visit his widowed sister, Mrs. Anna Leslie, who had settled in Joseph some years earlier.

Edgar purchased the local newspaper, the Silver Lake Harold. He handled every position except "printer's devil" -- he hired Edith Mabel Amey to do that job. The rest, as they say, is history.

Dick was born at "Grant Hospital of Chicago". The family lived at 434 N. Parkside at the time.

June, 1950 Portland, Multnomah, OR Dean's book, Joseph, Chief of the Nez Perce was published. The book eventually was in nearly every school library in the state, as well as school libraries throughout the US. After publication, he did author-tours to grade schools where he gave talks to the children. PHOTO The book has recently been re-released.
